The Small Daily Choices That Shape a Healthier Home

Since having a new baby, I’ve been home more than usual and I’m starting to notce things differently. I’m noticing how many loads of laundry I do, how often I wash my hands, how quickly the dishes pile up, how many times a day I wipe the counter, and how often I reach for baby wipes, bath products, sunscreen, hand soap, laundry detergent, face products, body wash, and household cleaners. These are not products we use once in a while. They are part of the rhythm of daily life.

Lately, I’ve found myself becoming more aware of that. Not in a fearful way, and not in a “throw everything out and start over” way. More in a quiet, practical, “I think I want to be more intentional about what we are repeatedly using in our home” kind of way.

I’ve also found myself feeling less confident about grabbing whatever is familiar from the grocery store shelf without thinking much about it. I’m not saying every mainstream product is terrible, and I’m definitely not trying to make this another stressful thing for people to worry about. I’ve just started paying closer attention to ingredient lists, fragrances, labels, fabrics, air flow, and the number of products we use as a family.

Between a new baby, older kids, work, laundry, meals, appointments, and everyday family life, I do not have endless time to research every product category from scratch.

So for me, this has not been about perfection. It has been about simplification.

The Body Is Always Responding to Its Environment

As an osteopath, I tend to think about the body through repeated inputs.

We often talk about movement, posture, breath, sleep, stress, nutrition, hydration, and nervous system regulation. These are all things that can influence how the body functions over time. But our environment is part of that picture too.

The body is not a collection of separate parts working in isolation. Our systems are interconnected and constantly communicating. The nervous system, circulatory system, lymphatic system, respiratory system, digestive system, skin, fascia, muscles, and joints are all influencing one another all the time.

As a practitioner, I’ve learned that the root cause of an issue is not always obvious. I have seen many cases where the symptom someone feels is not necessarily where the problem began. A person may come in with pain, tension, fatigue, headaches, digestive discomfort, breathing restrictions, or general stiffness, and part of the work is zooming out to understand the bigger picture. That kind of thinking changes the way you look at health.

It has opened my eyes to the fact that not everything affecting the body is visible or obvious. Some things are subtle. Some things are repeated quietly over time. Some things are part of the environment we live in every day, so we stop noticing them.

That is how I have started thinking about the products we use in our home too. The products we use on our skin become part of our daily routine. The products we clean with become part of the air and surfaces in our home. The laundry detergent we use sits against our skin for hours. The fabrics we wear touch our bodies all day. The air we breathe inside our home matters. These are small pieces of a much bigger conversation.

That does not mean we need to be obsessive. It does not mean we need to panic about every product we have ever used. But I do think it is worth asking what our family is exposed to repeatedly and where a simple change might actually make sense.

A 2022 review published in Current Pollution Reports looked at household cleaning products and indoor air quality, noting that cleaning products can contribute to indoor exposure to volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds. I don’t share that to scare anyone. I share it because it supports something many of us are starting to notice intuitively: the products we use inside our homes do become part of the home environment.

Why This Feels Different in This Season

This season has made me want simple, dependable options. I do not have time to stand in a store comparing every single bottle. I do not want to research every ingredient in every category every time we run out of something. I also do not want to make families feel like they need to overhaul their entire home overnight. That is not realistic for most people.

Instead, I’ve been slowly replacing products as we run out. When the hand soap is finished, I replace it with something I feel better about using. When we need more laundry detergent, I look for one made with naturally derived ingredients. When we need sunscreen, baby products, body wash, dish soap, or household products, I’m trying to choose options that feel more aligned with what I want in our home.

That approach has felt much more realistic to me. It takes away some of the pressure and allows these changes to happen naturally within our regular routines.

The Small Home Changes I’ve Been Paying Attention To

This has also gone beyond just the products we buy. I’ve found myself paying closer attention to the environment of our home in general. I’ve been opening the windows more often when I can, using fans to keep air moving, and relying a little less on constantly having the air conditioning running. Fresh air and circulation in the home are things I used to think about less, but now they feel like part of the bigger picture.

I’ve also started paying more attention to clothing fabrics, especially for the kids and baby. When something is worn directly against the skin all day, I think it is worth noticing what it is made from. I’ve been slowly getting rid of items made with fabrics I no longer feel great about and choosing more natural fibres when it makes sense.

Again, none of this is about doing everything perfectly. It is more about becoming aware of the things that are touching our skin, circulating through our home, and becoming part of our everyday routines. That includes the air we breathe, the fabrics we wear, the products we clean with, the soap we wash with, the detergent on our clothes, and the sunscreen we put on our kids before heading outside.

This is why the product swaps have felt like one part of a bigger shift for me, not the whole story.

Why I’ve Been Using ATTITUDE Living More Lately

Within that bigger shift, one brand I’ve been reaching for more often is ATTITUDE Living. What I’ve appreciated most is that they have products across so many categories, including household, laundry, dishes, body, face, baby, kids, and sunscreen. That alone has made things feel easier. Instead of trying to find one brand for laundry, another for dish soap, another for sunscreen, another for baby products, another for body care, and another for face products, I can find many of those everyday options in one place.

A lot of their products are made with naturally derived ingredients, and that has been a big part of the appeal for me. I still think it is important to read labels, check individual products, and choose what makes sense for your own family. But having a brand that covers so many of the basics has taken away a lot of the decision fatigue.

The Products I’ve Been Slowly Swapping

In the kitchen, I think about the products we use around dishes, counters, snacks, baby items, and everyone’s hands. Dish soap and hand soap are used constantly in our house. They are not occasional products. They are part of the day.

In the laundry room, I think about clothing, towels, bedding, baby clothes, sports clothes, and everything that sits against our skin for hours. Laundry detergent is one of those swaps that makes sense to me because it touches so many parts of family life.

In the bathroom, I think about body wash, face products, hand soap, and the products we use directly on our skin. These are products we reach for daily, so this category felt like a natural place to be more intentional without overcomplicating things.

For baby and kids, I think about how often we use wipes, bath products, lotions, and sunscreen. Babies and children have so many daily product touchpoints, and as a mom, I want products that feel simple, gentle, and easy to keep reaching for. And now that we are heading into more outdoor time, sunscreen is a big one too. Walks, sports, playgrounds, camping, cottage days, backyard time — it adds up quickly. Sunscreen is one of those products I want to feel good about using often because consistency matters, especially with kids.

Again, this is not about making every decision perfect. It is about noticing the products we use repeatedly and deciding where we want to be more intentional.

Start With What You Use Most Often

If this is something you have been thinking about too, my biggest suggestion is to start with the products your family uses constantly.

For me, the most practical place to start has been with the products we reach for every day, like hand soap, dish soap, laundry detergent, baby wash, kids’ bath products, sunscreen, and body wash.

Those are the swaps that feel the most worthwhile because they are already built into daily life.

You do not need to replace everything overnight. You do not need to make this complicated. You do not need to turn your home into a project.

Start with one thing that has run out and replace it with something you feel better about using. That is often enough to begin.

A Helpful Time to Try a Few Swaps

I wanted to share this now because ATTITUDE Living is having their Big Weekend Savings from May 22 to May 25, with up to 25% off.

My promo code (JUSTINET10) also gives you an additional 10% off the sale price, so if you have already been thinking about trying a few of their products, this may be a helpful time to start.

You do not need to do everything at once for it to still be worthwhile.

Final Thoughts

I’m not trying to make healthy living more complicated. Most people are already carrying enough, and the last thing I want to do is make everyday choices feel like another full-time job. For me, this has simply been about finding a few go-to products I feel good about using in our home, without having to research every single category from scratch every time we run out of something.

Health is rarely shaped by one big decision. More often, it is shaped by the small things we repeat: movement, breath, sleep, food, stress, rest, the way we care for our bodies, the way we set up our environments, and the products we reach for every day. This is one small area I’ve been paying more attention to lately. And for our family, it has made things feel a little simpler.
